This week, we performed a tube shock conversion on this cool Bugeye called ‘Cinnamon.” We did this because this is a performance car with a performance driver, and the lever shocks were not keeping the tire on the road uniformly while going over bumps, particularly during spirted driving. It’s really hard to have two mated lever shocks (they often have different damping left and right). Tube shocks are always uniform so you get symmetrical performance left and right.
The tube shocks will better dampen the bumps and ensure the tire contact patch is always optimized, and the increased negative camber will also improve handling. Reliability and longevity, as well as control and performance… these are the benefits of our front tube shock conversion kit. And Cinnamon will enjoy these benefits going forward!
We go through tons of lever shocks in our building.
Great shocks are required for a wonderful ride in any Spridget, but the original lever shocks are a serious wear item, constantly aging-out and leaking. Even the rebuilt ones are not as good as they used to be, and we’ve had to struggle to find a great and reliable source for the lever shocks we sell.
Should you want to keep your stock Bugeye stock, we do offer the best rebuilt front lever shocks available, which you can purchase by clickingthe above photo.
I love the way the correct lever shocks ride. They are the perfect balance of performance and comfort on a tiny car that needs all the comfort it can get… but lately we’ve been moving in the direction of this tube shock conversion simply because it eliminates the dependency on the old-fashioned lever shock design. While these are a little more pricey than the lever shocks, if you think about changing your lever shocks every three years or so (which has sadly become the norm), it’s a great way to economize in the long haul because the tube shocks should last 10 to 20 years.
Here’s Gumby at speed on the way to “British by the Sea” a couple weeks ago. This special car was awarded “first in class,” quite an honor in this large show which featured an assembly of about 320 classic British sports cars.
Driving Gumby allows me to appreciate the importance and effectiveness of the many modifications we add to our cars. Gumby is a competent highway cruiser and stunning restoration, with all the right modifications. I’ve had so many people over the years tell me they were terrified to drive their Bugeye over 40 miles an hour because the car was unstable and unpredictable… but Gumby tracks beautifully at 75 miles an hour.
We’ve now sold and restored almost 500 Sprites so we know how to make these cars wonderful. Please get in touch so we can help you get your car in winning form! We will be happy to pick up your car anywhere in the USA and improve it for you. And we certainly can provide the parts to get you there with grace and style. Get in touch!
One of the most exciting parts of the day in our workshop is that every one of these cars has a different personality. They’re such simple cars, and you would think that they’d all be pretty much the same, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, here are two cars that are radically different from one another; there’s a very strong community for each one of these flavors!
“Fiona” is a perfect example of a stock Bugeye in a factory Sprite color. Click the photo above to learn more!
Some of our clients just want to noodle around town, and for that application a stock 948 Bugeye is just perfect. Pictured here is “Fiona”, a 1960 Bugeye that was a California car its entire life, and is an older restoration. It is pretty much completely stock and drives how a Bugeye would have rolling off the show room floor in 1960. If you would like to learn more about Fiona, you can watch the driving video below or click here for more information!
Some of our other clients are enamored exhaust note and horsepower, and want a car that’s pushed out towards the limit. For these clients, “Sweet Spot” would be the car for them!
NOW SOLD to James in New York! Congrats on taking this fantastic Bugeye home! #410!!
NEW driving video! Vroom!
The NEW walk-around video below showcases the many custom features on this car!
Bugeyes were cheap when new, so it’s easy to find one online that needs a long list of upgrades… here is a car that has just about every upgrade we have available. This car is “in the sweet spot,” with tons of improvements for reliability and performance. Spot is ready to go now with no wait! Ready for your Spring!
Sweet Spot has returned to our shop and is now for sale!
We have owned this car three different times and for each owner, the car has jumped-up several levels. Spot is now set-up perfectly, with all the best stuff. This is a rare opportunity to buy an extremely well-modified and sorted Bugeye Sprite. It would take a lot of money and time to build a new car this good so if you are looking for a hot Bugeye, check this one out.
Bugeye bonnets are notoriously heavy and cumbersome, and as such can be hard to open, especially if you have a bad back. By adding our flip-forward nose kit, you can not only make the engine compartment infinitely more accessible for service (all but eliminating the painful bonnet “head bonk” inherent to Bugeye ownership), but also make the nose much easier to open and close!
The above video explains the ins and outs of flip-forward Bugeye noses; how to open and close them securely, how you can add rigidity to a floppy nose, and a basic overview of what comes in our flip-nose kits. All of the parts mentioned in the video are available for purchase, which you can do by clicking the photos below, or click here for our complete parts catalog!
