Bruce’s Bugeye is ready to head home!

Over the past month, we have been working hard to get Bruce’s Bugeye up and running again after a long hibernation. When the car arrived here in June, it was packed full of parts and pieces that needed to be installed. We essentially disassembled the car entirely and mechanically rebuilt it with front disc brakes, a Ford five-speed transmission, aluminum radiator, new HS2 carburetors, brand new exhaust with twin-tip muffler, and much, much more!

*It’s rare to see an engine sitting in the driver’s seat. The vise grip shown in the photo was the steering wheel upon delivery to our shop.*

Horn brush hijinks

Once in a while with antique British sports cars, life is very simple. Something that isn’t functioning sometimes just needs to be taken apart and flipped around, then actually works just perfectly. This is one of those special moments… so, please watch the video below and enjoy.

We are putting the finishing touches on Penny Lane this week, which will be headed to Ohio very soon. As a part of the final checklist, we noted a squeaky steering wheel. As it turns out, the fix for this is an easy one.

Bugeye horn brushes are a vital link between the horn push and the horn. Without them, your Bugeye will not “beep”. In this instance, the horn push had been installed upside down so that the soldered end (see the photo below) was touching the brass contact ring on the horn cone, creating a squeal. Turning the brush over solved the issue.

1959 entry-level Bugeye driver for sale! 1275 engine, front disc brakes!

Now SOLD to John in New York! Congratulations, John! Time to get the project car on the way and one you can use in its place! Thank you!

This is “Sully”(AN5L 27786), a 1959 Austin Healey Sprite Mark 1 Bugeye owned by the same diligent owner for the past 15 years. The car comes with $16,000 in documented restoration receipts, all done by the last owner. The car has a 1275 engine and rib case transmission as well as front disk brakes, electric fuel pump, and exhaust header. All new gauges were installed and while non stock, they all work well (we can restore the dashboard to original specs if the new owner desires).

The car runs strong and is fun to drive. The floors are new, part of the $16K in restoration work that was done. Interior is new too. All of the restoration is outlined in a nice binder which will come with the car.

The car was seldom used in the last 15 years, and is now ready for a new home! A nice set of side curtains are included with the car, as well as a never-installed black tonneau!

Tonneaus: a Bugeye’s most important accessory!

We’re working on Milano this week to get it ready for its new owner. In particular, we are addressing its long tonneau that was fit over short tonneau fittings. In the video below, you can see why we feel that a new short tonneau is the correct remedy for this situation.

Of course, we could remove the short tonneau fittings and put in metal plugs, but the little dimples left behind in the vinyl are probably going to be there for life since the vinyl has gone through many heat cycles in its current configuration over the short nipples.

*You can see in this photo the row of short tonneau studs poking into the vinyl on the long tonneau, which is incorrect and damages the tonneau.*

Tonneaus are vital to the enjoyment of all open-cockpit classic cars of this vintage, so we’ve installed hundreds of them, and the short tonneau distinction continues to be an issue for many people who don’t know the difference, thus we felt another post might be helpful.

Meet Bob in the video below. He purchased a beautiful 1959 Bugeye we had called “Pedro” from us back in 2015, and we loaded the car into an enclosed trailer for him and shipped it to Florida.
