Here’s a special car that we’ have’ve been working on for a long time here at The Bugeyeguys World Headquarters. The car has moved to its home in Indiana, but I have reposted this because it’s such a cool build, and fun to revisit!
This car started as a Bring a Trailer auction vehicle that needed just about everything repaired, tightened-up and/or replaced. We bought it on behalf of a client who wanted us to create a Bugeye capable of competing for a land speed record attempt in the under one liter class, which was a tall order for a car with so many worn components.
To make the car safe and fast for the job, we sourced a 948 race engine with excellent power and performance, and we mated it to a Ford five-speed transmission. Then we rebuilt the suspension and all the running gear to make the car good and tight. Near the end of the project, the owner decided to keep it as a street car for now, so we ratcheted it back a bit. We edited the build to include a quieter exhaust and a few other creature comforts. We also worked on the interior to make it comfortable and elegant (if that’s a word that we can get away with when discussing such a raw Bugeye Sprite).
We made a custom blue tonneau to fit the chopped windshield, and fit new road tires and wheels; now we have a smooth-driving, delightful machine with race engine characteristics. She has a bit of a lumpy idle and a little less low end performance than you might like in a street car, but boy, does she come alive above 3000 RPMs!
Come for a drive with Bodhi and me in the video below and see if you can get a feel for this restoration, of which we are extremely proud. This was a well-worn Bugeye that has come back to life as a very capable car that will last for generations and delight people everywhere it goes!
Looking for a fun car like this one? Give us a call, we’ll be happy to build one for you!
