I’m a huge fan of GTs and I have one in my little collection, because I find these to be among the most beautiful and underrated British classics. You can do a lot with them that you can’t do with other British Sports cars. You can haul more courtesy of the hatchback… and use them for a longer season, courtesy of the hardtop. They also accommodate tall drivers better than most other British classics, so if you feel a little crowded in other classic cars, a GT could be a good choice for you!

“Ole Yeller”, as we have chosen to call this 1969 MGB GT (GHD4U165308G), is a really interesting car. I have a soft spot in my heart for MGBGTs. I think GTs are one of the most striking and spectacular British cars available, and yet, for years they’ve been ridiculously undervalued. Lately, however, there’s been a 40% bump in value (according to Hagerty) over the last year for GTs, so apparently I’m not the only one who thinks this way! I’ve been hoarding my own 1967 GT, and I really think these chrome bumper cars are the best. I’m particularly fond of the giant trunk logo with a mouthful of letters… the car may not have had a ton of horsepower, but the car certainly had a big rear lid emblem!
If you’re interested in this one, one main part of its value is its California history. I purchased it from a client in Oklahoma, so it’s had a dry lifetime, and it shows. The underside is remarkably solid; most MGBs have rust in the outer castle rails underneath the floor, but you will not find that here. This is an extremely strong car, and it’s rare to find one in this condition. Add to that a recent respray in primrose yellow and you’ve got a very attractive automobile.
We’ve completely rebuilt the front and rear seats and diaphragms to add more support and spruce up the interior. It’s quite comfortable to drive. Ole Yeller is a fine cruiser. We just put in a new battery (this has been converted to a single 12 volt system, and both battery boxes are good) so this car is ready to drive!
Another great feature here is the original overdrive. This is the factory Laycock de Normanville overdrive that was very popular in the era, and was used in Volvos and lots of other classic European cars. It’s a really desirable feature because these GTs are stout and pleasant to cruise in, and the overdrive transmission allows you to enjoy a nice day out on the highway. The overdrive is activated by the stalk on the right side of the steering column: all you have to do is pull back on the stalk to engage it. It works in both third and fourth gears.
The paint job is very good on this car. It is not a high-dollar respray but it still looks very nice. I’m certain they removed the front and rear window glass when they painted the car, as the gaskets are new; there is a little bit of overspray on trim pieces around the doors. Still, for an excellent driver this car has a striking appearance.
There’s more to do (as on every classic car that’s 50 years old). You might change the door top rubbers that meet the roll down windows- these are dried-out and cracked. There’s also quite a bit of tinting on the windows and that should be removable with a blade without too much trouble (unless you live in a particularly bright southern climate and want the tinting to stay).
The gas gauge and the horn aren’t working, and new shocks in the front would probably be nice-these are on their way out. So there’s always more to do and we can help the new owner do those items, or you can take the car as-is for a fun driver… either way, if you’re looking for what seems to be a rapidly appreciating classic that’s in great overall shape, this is a solid car to consider, and we’d be delighted to send it your way!
