Today we have for your consideration this 1960 AJS Model 8 350 motorcycle (VIN 10284). AJS was, at the time, a subsidiary of Associated Motorcycle Company (AMC for short), a conglomerate that owned several mid-to-large-sized motorcycle manufacturers from the time period, including Matchless and Norton. The Model 8 350cc was produced from 1960 to 1962 and is a badge-engineered twin to the Matchless G5 350.
This particular bike just absolutely oozes late-50s nostalgia. It’s powered by a 347cc, single-cylinder, 4-stroke engine that was advertised as having 21 horsepower from new. This engine is mounted to a 4-speed transmission.
This Model 8 has the absolute perfect amount of patina for a bike of this vintage. She’s weathered just right. And the look and feel of this simple machine will take you back!
Below you will find a short video of Terry explaining how to start the bike and kicking it over. I’ll forever be intrigued by the compression release lever on the handlebars to help the bike start (the other lever is for the choke).
Additionally, check out the driving video below to see how she handles on the road! As the riding video attests, this bike runs well, shifts through all the gears, and stops well too, with drum brakes front and rear. She’s fun to ride and comes with very handsome badging. The tires are older and could stand to be replaced, and she leaks some oil after running ( I bet they all do). I’d get a new battery too.
She comes with a service manual with a receipt present indicating the last service was performed in 2014.
