There is no such thing as a free lunch, especially when it comes to fuel tanks. Some people try to use a fancy internal coating on an old rusty fuel tank, and we have seen many coatings delaminate only to get ingested by the engine, (if they don’t gum up the works first). We had one tank with a coating that was lifetime guaranteed… that car came with intermittent fuel starvation since the coating kept clogging the fuel filter. With those symptoms, would you send back the tank for a free re-coat and try again? I wouldn’t.
And of course there are various experts who will claim you need the right preparation and the right product for it to work… but the bottom line is that a coating is a liability that I am not willing to add to the equation because I have a 100% reliability solution available… put in a new tank!
The tank shown here looked fine inside until you look in the neck and see the delaminated coating. This illustrated the problem. No coating is as good as new metal.
This coated tank shown also has the original hex drain plug. The configuration of this tank indicates this is the tank that came new with the car (see below). So a new tank is generally needed if you see this stamping and drain plug when looking at the tank from underneath. It has served its time. Time to replace it.
