You may remember a few weeks back that we boosted Goldie’s supercharger up to 8 pounds, and found that a valve guide was binding when it got hot enough, causing the engine to misfire. The head has been off, the guides have been machined properly and uniformly, and now Goldie sings right through all the revs. Click here to hear the old issue manifest in third gear above 3500 Rpms. Listen below to hear the new head go through the gears:
While it’s super cool to rip through the gears with this car, what I love most is the delicious change in the way this package delivers torque. Get on the gas in third gear at 3000 Rpms, and you are rewarded with a most un-Bugeye-like expression of rising torque, which is quite clear as you approach 4000 rpms. That’s all you need to smile, just this little midrange boost is reason enough to become a supercharger convert. After so many years of driving around with more traditional British engines, this “coming to life” elicits a kind of ecstasy you might even be able to see in the video above.
We are big time advocates of supercharging. We have done many of these conversions in our shop, and we are happy to pick-up your car and bring it here for that conversion, as well as whatever additional sprucing up or sorting you might need. Alternatively, we have all the parts you need to make your car sing like Goldie (including our twin tipped muffler, which you hear in the videos shown). Just keep in mind that the supercharger won’t fix a sick engine (or one with guides that are too tight). And we also recommend our uprated clutch pressure plate (a new product, call if you want one) so that the torque you see me gesturing about doesn’t spin your clutch.
