Door check straps are missing more often than I would expect. This is a problem, because without them, the doors can open beyond their limit and damage “A” pillar paint. The captive threads inside the body are essential to mount these straps and those threads are often damaged.
In the case of the car shown here, the treads were damaged beyond repair. So Kenny drilled out the damaged threads, hammered the socket a bit below grade and welded a 10/32 nut to the outside of the original once threaded hole.
Then he ground down the nut so that the vinyl covered interior panel could lay flat on the sheet metal. Now, the car sports new red check straps that are properly secured to the footwell. This is a nifty trick to make a secure mount for your check straps should your threads be beyond restoration.
