Your Bugeye boot is a big woofer. Music of any kind that might be playing in your trunk (bumps, rattles and leaping spare tires) is dramatically amplified because of the original factory design. The big open trunk without partitions points right at your ears and sound in there gets magnified, especially with a hard or soft top installed.
Did designer Jerry Coker want to attract attention while cruising the boulevard with his transistor AM radio at full volume in the trunk? I think not, the car and exhaust note already attracted enough attention. The giant trunk woofer is just part of the car and we have all learned to love it, as well as the affiliated amplified acoustics of our Bugeye trunks.
Now, as a bunch of errr “adults,” we want to silence bongs and boings that may be coming from behind. Our trunk carpet mat is ready for that job.
We used a trunk mat this week while preparing the red Bugeye “Meyer” for departure for a new home in Maine. Here is a picture of the trunk on Meyer before and after. Notice how much tidier. Quieter too! You can buy your own trunk mat by clicking here.
The original trunk covering was actually hardura, with horsehair backing. We sell hardura trunk mats too (in various colors), which you can find by clicking here. Since so many Bugeyes use carpet in the cockpit, the carpet is perfectly fine choice, since it coordinates with what is used throughout most cars these days.
I personally prefer hardura throughout the car, as I have used on my personal flagship “Gumby,” as you can see in the photo above. This is a more expensive option, but it is also a more realistic extension of the original hardura trunk (click here for an entire car hardura kit). Rubber mats were original to the car, and since hardura was original to the trunk, I could better justify hardura throughout in my personal car than a hardura trunk and carpet cockpit hybrid.
