If you like your Bugeyes “stock,” take a close look at this one!
AN5L 8739 (“Clifford”) was dispatched in December of 1958 (per the heritage certificate) and subsequently titled in the USA as a 1958 car. We often see the cars that arrive late in the year titled in the following year, but it’s nice to see this one retained a ’58 title, since there are so few 1958 cars left. For trivia lovers, most Bugeyes we see are titled as 1960 cars.
The car is a delight to drive, and has been well maintained. Receipts are included for service work done in 2015, by the prior owner.
This car has the correct original 948 engine and smooth case transmission that came with the car when new. It’s nice to see white wall tires still on the car, which also would have been how the car shipped when new according to the heritage certificate. These are the original bias ply type, just like when the car was new.
This car was restored from the ground-up in about 2012 by a passionate Bugeye restorer on the West coast who has done several Bugeyes. His work is excellent, and you can see in the restoration photo album that every inch of this car was redone. He chose to paint the interior to a high standard in the original Iris blue.
This is a interesting variant to the more common carpet covering you usually see. The originals would have shipped with blue ribbed rubber mat. As this material is no longer available, navy carpet is a popular option that is common in restored blue Bugeyes. We also have blue hardura available for an upgraded covering to match the original rubberized material used for the trunk mat.
Here, the restorer chose to leave the interior naked, which is perhaps closer to the original simple Bugeye interior. We’re happy to customize the car to the new owner’s specifications. We have all the various coverings in stock, and the choice will be left to the new owner.
Clifford comes with a nice top, fine side curtains and a nice tonneau. This car has only driven about 5000 miles since complete restoration and is now available for a good home! Call or email if interested!
